Buying a water pump goes wrong in one of two ways: people buy a pump that cannot pass what is actually in the water, or they buy on inlet size alone and discover that a bigger port does not fix a long, badly routed suction hose. This water pump buying guide covers the three families we carry, how to size one properly, and the setup mistakes that make a correctly specified pump look broken on its first day.
Clear water pumps move water with essentially no solids in it. Draining a pool down for winter, pulling a flooded basement back to dry, emptying a boat bilge, clearing a low spot in a yard after a storm, feeding a garden line from a rain barrel. The impeller runs tight clearances for efficiency, and that is exactly why grit destroys it.
Semi-trash and trash pumps are built with wider internal clearances and a heavier impeller so debris passes through instead of jamming. Semi-trash handles water carrying sand, silt and small gravel — construction dewatering, a muddy excavation, a pond. Full trash pumps go further and pass leaves, twigs and larger solids. You pay for that in efficiency: at the same engine size and port diameter, a trash pump moves less clean water per minute than a clear water pump does. That is the trade, and it is the whole decision.
Submersible pumps sit in the water instead of beside it. There is no suction hose and no priming, which removes the two most common causes of a pump that will not pull. They run on electricity rather than gasoline, so they can work indoors, in a pit, or anywhere exhaust would be a problem — but they need a power source at the site, which for a jobsite usually means a generator.
The honest rule: match the pump to the dirtiest water it will ever see, not the average. A clear water pump that meets gravel once is a clear water pump with a damaged impeller.
Three numbers decide whether a pump is right, and only the first one is on the box.
Port diameter — 1-inch, 2-inch, 3-inch, 4-inch — sets the ceiling. It tells you how much water can physically move through the pump and roughly what class of job it is for. A 1-inch unit is a homeowner tool. A 2-inch is the general-purpose size for property owners and light contracting. A 3-inch and up is dewatering equipment.
Flow rate in gallons per minute is the number that actually matters, and it is always quoted at ideal conditions. Champion's 1-inch clear water pump kit is rated at 30 gallons per minute. Their 2-inch semi-trash pumps are rated at 158 gallons per minute, and the 3-inch steps up to 343 gallons per minute — more than double the 2-inch for one inch of extra port. That jump is not linear anywhere in this category, which is why moving up a size is usually cheaper than running two smaller pumps.
Lift and head are what people forget. Every vertical foot the pump has to raise water, and every foot of hose it has to push through, costs flow. A pump advertised at 158 gallons per minute is not delivering 158 gallons per minute up a basement stairwell through 50 feet of discharge hose. Plan on real-world output well below the rating, and size up rather than down when the run is long or the lift is significant.
There is also a hard physical limit on the suction side. A surface pump does not suck water up — atmospheric pressure pushes it. That caps practical suction lift at roughly 25 feet under good conditions, and less as elevation and hose length increase. If the water is deeper than that below the pump, no surface pump of any size will reach it and you want a submersible instead.

Gasoline pumps go anywhere and need nothing but fuel, which is why they dominate storm response and remote work. The costs are real though: exhaust means outdoors only, they need priming and a suction hose, and they stop when the tank runs dry.
Electric submersibles remove all three problems and add one: you need power at the water. On a site with mains, that is trivial. Off-grid, it means a generator, and that is a sizing exercise of its own — work through our generator sizing guide before assuming a small inverter will start a submersible. Pump motors draw a heavy starting surge, and starting watts, not running watts, are what decide whether the generator copes.
For a flooded basement specifically, the calculus usually favours a submersible: no exhaust indoors, no priming, and it keeps working while you deal with everything else. For a pond, a ditch or a construction hole, the gas semi-trash pump is the tool.
Gasoline pumps use the same class of small off-road engine that portable generators do, so the same California rule applies. An engine has to be CARB certified before the unit can be sold new in the state, and plenty of otherwise identical models are 49-state only.
This one is worth knowing: Champion's semi-trash pumps are 50-state units — the 2-inch semi-trash pump with hose and wheel kits, the 2-inch with the extended-run gas tank and the 3-inch with the extended-run tank all carry the certification. Two of the Champion semi-trash pumps ship with an extended-run gas tank, and it changes what the machine is for. A standard pump tank measures runtime in a couple of hours. Dewatering is rarely a couple of hours — it is an overnight job, or a two-day job after a storm, and every refuel is a stop, a cool-down and a re-prime.
If the pump exists to handle an emergency you will not be standing over, buy the long-runtime version. If it exists for scheduled work you are already attending, the standard tank is fine and lighter to move.
Wheel kits fall in the same category. A 3-inch pump is a genuinely heavy object; over rough ground, wheels are the difference between one person deploying it and two.
Not priming it. A centrifugal pump cannot move air. Fill the pump housing with water before every start. Running it dry damages the seal, and that failure is fast.
Too much suction hose. Every foot of suction line costs you flow, and any air leak at a fitting stops the pump pulling entirely. Keep the suction side as short and as straight as the job allows, and put the pump close to the water rather than close to where the water is going. The discharge side is where length is cheap.
Leaving the strainer out, or letting it sit on the bottom. No strainer means the first stone ends the pump. A strainer resting in silt clogs within minutes. Suspend it, or set it on a board.
Letting the strainer break the surface. The moment it sucks air, flow stops and the pump has to be re-primed. On a falling water level, that happens without warning.
Running a clear water pump on dirty water "just this once". This is the single most common way these units die.
Storing it wet through a freeze. Water left in the housing expands and cracks the casing, and that is not a warranty failure. Drain it every time.
For a homeowner with a pool, a rain barrel or an occasional wet basement: a 1-inch clear water pump kit is the right size and the right money. Buy it complete with hoses so there is nothing to assemble at the moment you need it.
For a property owner, a farm or a light contractor: a 2-inch semi-trash pump is the general-purpose answer. It handles muddy water, moves enough volume to matter, and stays light enough for one person. Add the extended-run tank if the job is likely to be an overnight one.
For serious dewatering: the 3-inch semi-trash pump more than doubles the flow of the 2-inch, and on a large excavation or a flooded field that is the difference between finishing and not. Get the wheel kit.
For sumps, pits, indoor flooding or water deeper than about 25 feet below the pump: go submersible. No priming, no exhaust, and no suction-lift ceiling.
