Home Standby Generators

A home standby generator is permanently installed on a pad outside the house, wired to a transfer switch, and fueled by natural gas or propane. It starts automatically within seconds of an outage whether or not anyone is home — no cords, no fuel cans, no manual switching.

Urban Supply carries the Champion Power Equipment standby line, including the 22kW FLEX and 22kW aXis platforms with 100A, 150A, and 200A whole-house service-entrance transfer switches in NEMA 3R outdoor enclosures.

Whole-house vs. essential circuits

A 22kW unit with a 200A service-entrance switch backs the entire panel — nothing gets prioritized, nothing gets shed, the house simply runs. Smaller transfer switches back a subpanel of essential circuits: furnace, well pump, refrigeration, a few outlets. Essential-circuit installs cost less and are the right answer for a smaller service, but they require deciding in advance what you are willing to live without.

What the install actually involves

  • Licensed electrician for the transfer switch and panel tie-in. This is not DIY work and most jurisdictions will not permit it as such.
  • Licensed plumber or gas fitter to run and size the natural gas or propane line. Undersized gas line is the single most common cause of a standby unit that starts and then stalls under load.
  • Permit and inspection in most municipalities, plus a utility notification for natural gas.
  • Pad and clearance — a level composite or concrete pad with manufacturer-specified clearance from windows, doors, and vents.
