Choosing a Victron inverter/charger comes down to three questions: how much continuous power your loads need, what your battery bank voltage is, and whether you're running off a single shore/grid connection or juggling both shore power and a generator. This guide breaks down the Victron MultiPlus-II and Quattro lines carried at Urban Supply so you can match the right unit to your RV, boat, or off-grid system the first time.
Continuous power (VA/watts). Add up everything that might run at once — air conditioner, microwave, induction cooktop, tools. A 3000VA unit delivers roughly 2400W continuous; a 5000VA unit around 4000W; the 10,000VA Quattro about 8000W. Size for your simultaneous load, not your total appliance list.
System voltage. Victron builds the same models for 12V, 24V, and 48V battery banks. Higher-voltage systems (48V) move the same power at lower current, which means thinner cables and less loss — the preferred choice for larger off-grid and energy-storage builds.
Charging output. Every MultiPlus-II and Quattro is also a powerful multi-stage battery charger. Match the charge current to your bank so you can recharge in a reasonable window without stressing the batteries.
Number of AC inputs. This is the single biggest reason to step up from a MultiPlus-II to a Quattro — more on that below.
The MultiPlus-II is a pure sine wave inverter, a battery charger, and an automatic transfer switch in one unit, with one AC input. Its PowerAssist feature lets the battery bank boost a limited shore connection so a 15A or 30A pedestal can still run a big load without tripping. The Quattro does everything the MultiPlus-II does but adds a second AC input, so it can automatically switch between shore power and a generator (with input-priority rules you set).
