Concrete Fire Bowl Buying Guide: Sizes, Match Lite vs Auto Ignition, Gas vs Propane

A concrete fire bowl is the simplest way to put a real gas flame on a pool wall or patio, and it's also easy to order wrong if you guess at the size, the ignition or the fuel. We at Urban Supply are an authorized TessaRai dealer, and nearly every question we get about these bowls comes down to the same few decisions: which size, match lite vs auto ignition, natural gas or propane, and whether you want water in the picture too. This guide walks through each one so you can order once and get it right.

What a Concrete Fire Bowl Is and How the TessaRai Kits Are Built

TessaRai bowls are hand-cast by Travertine and More from GFRC, which is glass-fiber reinforced concrete. The same material and finishes run across the fire bowls, water bowls and fire tables in the line.

A fire bowl kit is the bowl plus everything that turns it into a working gas fire pit: a flat pan, a ring burner, hoses and fittings, a key valve and lava rock, with more bags of rock on larger bowls. The Auto Ignition kit adds an electronic igniter, a 13v transformer and a WiFi control panel on round bowls or a WiFi control box with an app on square bowls.

If you only want the vessel, with no burner or plumbing, the TessaRai cast concrete bowls are sold on their own. For a fire feature, start with the TessaRai fire bowl kits, where the pan and burner ring are already matched to the bowl.

Choosing the Right Concrete Fire Bowl Size

Size drives everything else: the burner ring, the weight, whether the bowl is stock or built to order, and how much wall it takes up. Weights below are for the bare cast bowl before the pan, burner and lava rock go in.

Bowl size Shape Burner ring Bowl weight Availability
27-inch Round 12-inch 99 lb Stock
30-inch Round 12-inch 120 lb Stock
33-inch Round 18-inch 180 lb Stock
39-inch Round 18-inch 284 lb Built to order
48-inch Round 24-inch 514 lb Built to order
60-inch Round 30-inch 833 lb Built to order
76-inch Round 36-inch 1,560 lb Built to order
24-inch Square 12-inch 67 lb Stock
30-inch Square 12-inch 127 lb Stock
36-inch Square 18-inch 242 lb Stock
42-inch Square 18-inch 356 lb Built to order
48-inch Square 24-inch 514 lb Built to order

A few rules of thumb:

  • Pool walls and raised bond beams: 27- to 33-inch round or 24- to 30-inch square, usually in pairs or threes. All of these are stock.
  • Patio centerpiece: 33- or 39-inch round or 36-inch square, where the 18-inch ring spreads the flame across more of the bowl.
  • Courtyards, commercial patios and resort-style pools: 48 inches and up. These are heavy and ship by freight.

The 39-, 48-, 60- and 76-inch round bowls and the 42- and 48-inch square bowls are built to order, allow extra lead time. Product pages list special-order items at about 4–6 weeks, so on a project with a firm deadline either choose a stock size or order the built-to-order bowl before the hardscape is scheduled.

Match Lite vs Auto Ignition: Which Ignition Should You Choose?

Every TessaRai fire bowl kit comes in two ignition versions, and the choice is about convenience and wiring, not flame quality. Both use the same bowl, pan and burner ring.

  • Match Lite is a manual key valve: turn the key to open the gas and light the burner by hand. There's no electrical hookup, which makes it the simpler install where running low-voltage wire would be a hassle.
  • Auto Ignition adds an electronic igniter powered through a provided low-voltage transformer connection, plus a WiFi-enabled control panel on round bowls or a control box and app on square bowls, so you light and shut down the bowl from your phone.

Choose Match Lite if you want fewer parts and no wiring, or if the bowl will only be lit a few times a season. Choose Auto Ignition if the bowls are used most evenings, sit on a wall you'd rather not lean over with a lighter, or a client expects app control. Either way the kit ships with a key valve, so there's a manual shutoff in the line.

Natural Gas vs Propane Fire Bowl: Which Fuel Fits Your Yard?

Every gas fire bowl TessaRai makes is listed for natural gas (NG) or propane (LP), and you pick the fuel at checkout. The kit ships for the fuel you select, so settle the question before you order.

  • Natural gas suits a house that already has gas service and a bowl that will live in one spot. A licensed gas plumber runs the line once, and there's nothing to refill.
  • Propane suits a property with no gas service, a finished yard you don't want to trench, or a patio feature you might relocate. You'll need a tank near the bowl; TessaRai's LP tank cover with a lid, 18 inches square by 20 inches high, keeps it out of view.

Whichever fuel you choose, professional installation by a licensed gas plumber is required for every gas-fired TessaRai product; the plumber sizes the supply to the burner and leak-tests the line before first light. If you're weighing the same natural gas vs propane fire bowl question for a fire table or outdoor fireplace, our outdoor fireplace buying guide covers it from that angle.

Finishes and Matching Bowls Across a Pool or Patio

TessaRai casts its concrete pieces in eight finishes: Black, Charcoal, Medium Grey, Light Grey, Grey White, Beach Sand, Beach Dune and Coastal Blue. The first seven are stock; Coastal Blue is special-order, which adds lead time and an upcharge. Lighter finishes contrast with the dark lava rock by day, while Black and Charcoal recede at night and let the flame stand out.

Because the fire bowl kits, fire and water bowl kits, plain bowls, scupper water bowls, fire tables and fire column all share that palette, you can run one finish across the property: fire bowls on the wall behind the pool, a matching fire table on the patio and a scupper bowl feeding the spa, all in Charcoal or Beach Sand. If a hot tub or spa is part of the plan, our hot tub buying guide covers those options. The one exception is the tumbled wall fire pits, which use Sierra, Sand Dune or Granite stone and won't match a cast bowl color for color.

Fire and Water Bowls and Other Ways to Use the Same Bowl

The crossover we get asked about most is the fire and water bowl: a scupper bowl with a cast-in spillway, the full fire kit and a stainless steel spillway, so water sheets into the pool while the flame burns above it. The TessaRai fire and water bowl kits come in 27-, 33- and 39-inch round and 24-, 30- and 36-inch square, in Match Lite or Auto Ignition, with the 39-inch round built to order.

For flame ringed by water on all sides, the 360 fire and water bowl kit puts an inner fire bowl inside a 40-inch round outer bowl and includes the pump and pipes. For how these fit into a pool design alongside scuppers and sheer descents, read our pool water features guide.

Beyond fire and water, the same bowl shape shows up across the line:

  • Water only. TessaRai scupper water bowls use the cast-in spillway without a burner, in the same six sizes. A plain bowl can also become a water bowl with the black curved spillway for round bowls or the cut-in straight spillway kit for square bowls, and copper sleeves are made for the same sizes.
  • At seating height. Rectangle, square and round concrete fire tables come as complete gas units, plus an 18 by 20 inch fire column; browse TessaRai fire tables and columns.
  • Low and wide. The 40-inch patio fire pit, in Match Lite or Auto Ignition, is the pick when you want chairs pulled up around the flame.
  • Stone instead of cast. TessaRai tumbled wall fire pits are built from dry-stacked tumbled stone as round, square and rectangular gas fire pits with a matched pan and burner, or as wood-burning walls fitted with a steel or stainless insert.

Installation, Delivery and Care

Every gas fire bowl needs a licensed gas plumber to run the supply and make the final connection, and an Auto Ignition bowl also needs its low-voltage transformer connection run to the bowl. Fire and water bowls and water bowls are plumbed by a pool or water-feature installer, who sets the flow to the bowl. On a pool build, get both trades on the plan early so the gas line, water line and wiring go in before the wall is finished.

Estimated delivery is 7–14 business days for in-stock sizes and about 4–6 weeks for built-to-order bowls. Large bowls ship by freight to the curb, not the backyard, so line up a crew or equipment to move them.

Cast concrete holds up well outdoors, but it's porous, so apply a penetrating concrete sealer once a year and more often in a harsh climate. Keep a fitted vinyl cover on the bowl when it's not in use, and clean it with mild soap and water, never harsh acid cleaners. In a freeze region, drain any water bowl and cover it before the first hard freeze.

Does a Gas Fire Bowl Need a Licensed Gas Plumber?

Yes. Every gas-fired TessaRai product, Match Lite or Auto Ignition, natural gas or propane, requires professional installation by a licensed gas plumber. The kit ships with the hoses, fittings and key valve, but the supply line, final connection and leak test are the plumber's job.

How Heavy Is a Concrete Fire Bowl?

The 24-inch square bowl weighs 67 pounds and the 27-inch round 99 pounds. The 33-inch round is 180 pounds, the 48-inch bowls are 514 pounds and the 76-inch round is 1,560 pounds, all before the pan, burner and lava rock are added. Any bowl on a raised wall should sit on a structure your builder has confirmed can carry it.

Can a Cast Concrete Bowl Stay Outside Through Winter?

Yes, with some preparation. Seal it once a year, put a fitted vinyl cover on it before the first hard freeze, and if it holds water, as a fire and water bowl or scupper bowl does, drain it before freezing weather arrives. Close the key valve when the bowl won't be used for a while.

Ready to Choose Your Concrete Fire Bowl?

Settle the size first, then the ignition, then the fuel, and the rest of the order falls into place.
